The South Australian State Government has released a draft Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Bill 2019 for community consultation. The legislation will prohibit the sale, supply and distribution of plastic straws, single-use cutlery, beverage stirrers, expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and clam-shell containers and all products made of oxo-degradable plastic. Other problematic items such as coffee cups and lids, polystyrene trays and thicker plastic bags will (and must) be considered for inclusion in the legislation at a later date.
