Right now the Australian Parliament is considering the Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020 – national legislation that has the potential to take action against the most harmful and problematic single-use plastics and packaging. But this bill doesn’t go far enough – it doesn’t ban killer plastics and industry schemes are voluntary.

I am an ocean-loving Australian concerned about the health of our coastlines and oceans from the increasing levels of plastic pollution.

With 80% of plastics entering our oceans from land-based sources, Australia must take responsibility for the waste created on our shores and the plastic that tragically ends up in the environment.

The proposed Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020 introduced into the Australian Parliament in August 2020 needs to be more ambitious. Australia needs to accelerate action against plastic and waste, set targets for industry and bring our nation into line with other countries. We can do this by creating mandatory product stewardship schemes like banning problematic single-use plastics and plastic packaging that are doing so much harm to coastal habitats and marine life.

Time is running out for our oceans and for marine life in the war against plastic pollution. This may be Australia’s only chance to introduce national legislation on killer plastics. I urge you to be on the right side of history.

In 2019 Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: "To protect our oceans, Australia is committed to leading urgent action to combat plastic pollution choking our oceans.”

Senator, I urge you to listen to our Prime Minister and listen to an everyday Australian (me!) and make the Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020 the Bill that stops single-use plastics and plastic packaging from devastating the oceans and Australia’s coastlines.
