WRITE to Scott Morrison to take action against illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Tell him to put the whales and the wishes of the Australian people before those of Japan, and ask him to raise the whaling issue with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe when he visits Australia on Friday.

We're urging the Australian Government to:

Send a ship to the Southern Ocean to oppose illegal whaling by the Japanese Whaling Fleet
Take Japan to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea to challenge its whaling activities.

In Opposition your party stated: "We’ve got blood in the water and a blind eye in Canberra, it’s completely unacceptable. These are Australian waters that should be protected. Whaling should never be occurring but for it to occur in Australian waters is an utter failure in Canberra.

"It’s time finally for the government to be focusing on protecting our waters rather than protecting their own back. We just need to have a Customs vessel, we need to be upfront.”

I am asking you to raise the issue with Prime Minister Abe when he visits the country on Friday and I'm also asking you to send a ship south for the whales, to live up to your party's promises, to defend Australia’s waters, our whales, to represent the wishes of the majority of Australians and not the wishes of Japan.

The Japanese whaling fleet is now on its way to the Southern Ocean again this summer to illegally kill 333 protected Minke whales.

The Japanese whalers have an outstanding $1 million dollar fine, after being found in contempt of an Australian Federal Court ruling which banned their whaling operations in the Australian Whale Sanctuary. Their so-called 'scientific' research was also found to be illegal by the International Court of Justice.

International law expert, Professor Tim Stephens, said Australia could put a stop to this practice by taking Japan to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Obligations under the Law of the Sea Convention include mandatory dispute resolution, the protection and preservation of the marine environment, and duties to cooperate.

I am asking the Morrison Government to take Japan to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea, where Japan can be challenged over its whaling activities as Japan is not meeting its international obligations to protect whales. The tribunal has a system of mandatory dispute settlement, one that's very difficult to opt out of.

Sending a vessel and taking further legal action to halt whaling is the very least the Australian Government should be doing to end this needless slaughter.
